CLATSKANIE, Scappoose’s girls soccer team finished the Cowapa League season without a loss on Thursday night, beating Astoria 4-0 on senior night to close at 10-0 in league play and 11-2-1 overall, according to the OSAA. The Indians have not allowed a league goal since Sept. 23.
The boys made it a sweep, winning 2-0 at Astoria for their fourth straight shutout, and late Thursday the OSAA listed them second in the league, a spot that carries an automatic playoff bid.
Girls: Unbeaten in League Play
The girls won 4-0 at Tillamook on Tuesday and 4-0 again at home against Astoria on Thursday, per the OSAA. They were ranked No. 2 in 4A on Thursday, behind only The Dalles/Dufur, and have the top RPI in the classification, according to the OSAA rankings. Banks (10-4-1) finished second in the league after a 6-0 win over Seaside on Thursday. The 4A girls first round is Wednesday, Nov. 4.
Boys: Four Straight Shutouts and a Move to Second
The boys (6-6-3, 6-1-3 Cowapa) won 2-0 at Astoria’s CMH Field on Thursday, two days after shutting out Tillamook/Neah-Kah-Nie at home Tuesday, Oct. 27, according to the OSAA. The Tillamook win was the third straight 1-0 result for Scappoose, which also beat Valley Catholic on Oct. 20 and Banks on Oct. 22, and Thursday made it four shutouts in a row. The Indians have not lost since Oct. 13.
Going into Thursday, Valley Catholic (now 13-1-1, 8-1-1) and Tillamook/Neah-Kah-Nie held the league’s top two spots, and Scappoose was third. Under the OSAA’s 4A playoff rules, four at-large spots go to third-place teams by ranking once the rankings freeze Saturday, Oct. 31, so a third-place finish would have left the Indians waiting on the numbers. The 4A boys first round is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Late Thursday the OSAA’s league standings listed Scappoose second, ahead of Tillamook/Neah-Kah-Nie, which lost 5-1 at Valley Catholic the same night. The league’s top two finishers get automatic playoff bids. The OSAA page had not yet folded the Valley Catholic result into the Tillamook row when this story was published, so the final order is the league’s to confirm. The boys were ranked No. 13 in 4A late Thursday with the No. 11 RPI, per the OSAA.
